Mark, Yvette and Hayden with their Communities in Bloom award

Pinewood Inn was the 2016 First Place winner of the Business Beautification Award for Communities in Bloom.

"The Pinewood Inn was chosen to receive this prestigious award as they scored the highest marks from our 3 local judges in the categories of Tidiness & Environmental Action, Floral Displays & Maintenance, and Landscape. When we talked to Mark and Yvette, we were impressed by their belief in being sustainable and leaving the earth a better place for their son Hayden.
. . . In the front of their Inn, they have created a remarkable butterfly garden that is well cared for and visually appealing. They have planted a variety of trees across the front and side as well to further landscape the property. The back of their Inn is a private and quiet oasis much sought after by their customers, who enjoy the relaxing view of the lake.
Congratulations to the Pinewood Inn and the Smith family for winning the 2016 Business Beautification Award!"

Mark, Yvette and Hayden

Mark and Yvette both grew up in Oakville, Ontario. They bought Pinewood Inn (built in 1962) and moved to Barry's Bay from Burlington in January 2011

Mark worked on the assembly line at Ford Motor Co for 17 years and Yvette had been self employed as a dog groomer and an esthetician before taking on the current role of accommodation hosts.

In 2006 they welcomed their son Hayden. Together they knew that they wanted to raise him somewhere other than in the busy and very commercially driven GTA, and get to where nature is just outside the door. Having been at Ford for what seemed like a lifetime, Mark wanted out of the factory. He had camped in Algonquin Park most of his life and knew that that was the direction he wanted to go. Yvette's previous careers gave her a solid background in customer service and a strong desire to provide a great product.

Pinewood Inn when Yvette and Mark took it over

There were a couple of options available to them, but after discussing those choices with the local realtor Barb Kraft Kuiack, they decided to check out Pinewood Inn.  Upon arrival for the first time, they had driven through town first and were impressed by the quaint nature of the town and having a small child, were very pleased with the knowledge that Barry's Bay had a hospital. Sadly, when arriving at the motel for the first time, they were disappointed. It was in a serious state of disrepair. The rooms were filthy, out of date and unkempt. But they could see potential. Most especially being that the rooms had back doors to a (potentially) lovely backyard that overlooked Kamaniskeg Lake.

The road to motel ownership was a challenging one.  After two years, many setbacks, challenges and clinging to the faith in themselves that they could make it work, they moved to Barry's Bay Jan. 28, 2011, with their son, two large dogs, a diabetic cat and more stuff than they had room for.

Through determination and much hard work they have made a business for themselves. All the rooms have new soft furnishings including carpet and Mark is slowly renovating all the bathrooms and working the landscape for broad appeal. The list of work/renovations/landscaping/SEO and community involvement that has been achieved is staggering. The Pinewood Inn of today is a far cry from the one they bought in 2011, now a reputable, sought out motel in Barry's Bay and winner of 2016 Business Beautification award through Communities in Bloom.

"We are so pleased with the results of our continued efforts and that we have a strong connection to our community. The feeling of taking a business that was failing and turning it into something relevant and successful is so satisfying. Even when the time comes to move on from the motel business we will live out our days here in the Madawaska Valley, it is our home."
